Nike - Take It To The Next Level

You may have noticed that there are a lot less updates on my blog these days, and that's because I am currently out of country right now, but things should resume back to normal once I get back. Anyway, coming back from watching "Sherlock Holmes", I must say it was an extremely entertaining and well-made movie. Of course, a lot of credits goes to Robert Downey Jr.'s great acting, but I believe the real star here is actually the film's director: Guy Ritchie. That is why I'm posting a commercial directed by him a couple years ago for Nike. (in collaboration with The Mill) Ritchie has the viewers experience what it's like to live the life of a world-famous soccer player, literally through the player's own eyes. The whole commercial maintains the brisk pace and the fun actions also found in the movie.

所以今天打算po一個他幾年前導的一個Nike的廣告 "Take It To The Next Level".

Alma

Merry Christmas everyone! Feeling the holiday spirit everywhere, I feel like I should post something relatable too. "Alma" is a high quality animation from the Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas. The cute character designs, soft and beautiful lighting, and the great editing and cinematography definitely has that Pixar signature written all over it. However, don't let its cute exterior fool you, since the short is actually quite creepy and scary, like nothing you would see from the kids-friendly studio. It really makes you wonder if this is where all those mysteriously disappeared kids ended up at.

Artificial Paradise, Inc.

"Artificial Paradise, Inc." is a slick piece of work from the Belgium director JP Frenay. The short has incorporated a lot of visual effects tricks like fluid simulations and procedural animation to create this cool yet eerie world. The creepy machines in the film literally look like devices made in hell, and yet they are used to display holographic imageries of a beautiful paradise, which is in direct contrast to their own scary appearances. As cool and provocative as this film looks, I certainly hope our future is not anything close to this.

Sixes Last

Just came back from watching Avatar, and like many of my friends and audiences there, I was thoroughly impressed by it. The visual effects and imageries are truly amazing and revolutionary. One of my favorite parts of the film is the alien yet beautiful environments in Pandora, which really reminds me of 1stAveMachine's earlier works involving moving plants, glowing flowers and extraterrestrial beings that are so seamlessly integrated with reality. Projects such as the MV for "Sixes Last", the spot for Quinns, and the ad for Samsung's LED TV practically defines the company's early identity.

MTV HD "Crow"

Psyop (the maker of "Coke: Heist") has created this beautiful and elegant commercial for MTV HD channel. The whole spot looks like a traditional Chinese ink painting coming alive. In it, the creatures constantly transform back and forth between trees and crows. the whole ad is rendered in black and white, with no other colors, which creates some rather artistic imageries.

Shrek Forever After Trailer

For some reason, a whole bunch of trailers for some highly anticipated movies next year suddenly came out today and yesterday. One of those is our very own "Shrek Forever After", pictured above with an over-weight Puss in Boots. I did not work on this movie, (Currently doing "How to Train Your Dragon" instead) but I did see the early screening. And I got to say that this one is a lot better than the third one, and could be better than second one too. Some of the other trailers include Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland", "Clash of the Titans", and "Iron Man 2". Oh, if you haven't seen "Tron: Legacy", it's definetly worth checking out too.

Nokia: Get Out and Play

Although this commercial is rather old, it still puts a smile on my face every time I watch it. Nokia is really good at making some pretty cool ads.(Remember "The Journey Starts Here"?) "Get Out and Play" is a stop-motion video created to promote their N-Gage device. For those of you who once owned a Nokia cellphone, the game "Snake" must undoubtedly ring a bell. For those of you who haven't, it is a simple game where you guide a snake to eat dots. The more dots it eats, the longer it grows. This ad takes the idea from the game and aims to create the biggest snake in the world using humans. It's fun to see this snake "grows" from one person to a line of hundreds of people by the end. Watch Behind the Scenes here.

(還記得 "The Journey Starts Here" 嗎?) "Get Out and Play" (出門玩樂去) 是為 N-Gage 所打的一個逐格動畫廣告.

World Builder

"World Builder" is a touching story from Bruce Branit about a man building a virtual world that feeds into the mind of his comatose lover. This short was originally submitted to various film festivals, but was under-appreciated by the judges. Surprisingly, it found its life in the internet world when Bruce uploaded it on to YouTube, and became one of the most popular videos. However, as sad as the story is, the holographic building device is pretty damn cool. I'd love to try one of those things to build my own little world.

Kiwi!

"Kiwi!" is a Dony Permedi's master thesis animation at The School of Visual Arts in New York. Since its upload in 2006, the short has garnered more than 24 million views on YouTube... now that is some crazy internet viral effect going on here. The cute short tells the story of a kiwi, a type of flightless bird originating from New Zealand, trying to fulfill his life-long dream of flying in the air. Even if the rendering and lighting in this student short is simple, with almost no texture or effects, the animation is still very fluid and well-made. Not to mention it's got a story that's both very sweet and sad.

"Kiwi!" The School of Visual Arts

The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon

Fed up with the overload of Hollywood slasher movies involving unimaginative weapons such as guns, knives or chainsaws? This hilarious short with an unusually long title from Richard Gale has the nemesis killing a guy with a... spoon. And the bad guy doesn't even try to stab or jam the spoon in, he just keeps tapping him, for years. As I watch the film, I can really imagine the pain and agony the victim's feeling, as I would be much happier if I were killed in a more instant and normal way. The opening of the film says it all, "Some murders takes seconds, others takes hours. Now, this murder... takes years!"

Richard Gale 的爆笑短片 "The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon" ("一個用極為沒效率的武器所進行的恐怖漫長謀殺", 真的是我看過最長的標題) 是利用一個...

The TV Show

This little gem from Sugimoto Kousuke called "The TV Show" is sort of like a compilation of all the great classic Japanese anime and shows back in the 70's and 80's. The video constantly transitions from one part to the next as if the previous part is merely on a display devise of the next part. Each segments are different and have their own distinctive and quirky Japanese drawing styles, while the music is very catchy and works great with the animation. The animation gets crazier and funnier with each cycle, and ultimately ends up being a huge chaotic mishmash.

Peripetics

The use of computer animation in the realm of fine art is quite rare. That's why "Peripetics", a unique piece of animated art, is so intriguing. Created by the London-based group Zeitguised, (the guys who did "Sweetheart" with Universal Everything) this is a six-act short for the opening exhibition at the Zirkel Gallery. According to Zeitguised, "It entails six imaginations of disoriented systems that take a catastrophic turn." The imageries in the animation and the sound affects seem like abstract representations of human bodies and organs, strange architectures, and alien machineries.

The Crisis of Credit Visualized

Ever wondered how this global economic melt-down ever got started? You probably heard a lot of detailed and lengthy explanations involving confusing analogies and foreign terms such as "sub-prime mortgage", "CDOs", and "credit default swap". And if you are as financially clueless as I am, those words probably did nothing but made your head hurt, and still ended up knowing nothing. Luckily, Jonathan Jarvis noticed people like us and created this informative animation that clearly explains everything. the graphics he used are very simple and diagrammatic. Combined with the power of animation, Jonathan was able to break down a complex subject and made it easy to understand for everyone.

Thanks, Lolay!

Absolut Dissection

Mass Market, Psyop's sister company (the one who did Coke "Heist") , has created this gorgeous TV spot for Absolut Vodka. In this ad, the vodka bottle disintegrates into thousands of tiny pieces, revealing the clear liquid within. The water you see here is real, not CG. The studio used an 8000 fps camera to shoot the moment when a balloon full of water explodes when being poked. They then combined the ultra slow-motion footage of the water with computer generated glass shards to create this video. I love the attention to details in this ad, especially how in the end when the glasses piece themselves back together in meticulous and intelligent motions.

Pigeon: Impossible

"Pigeon: Impossible" is a fun little short from Lucas Martell involving the battle between a rookie government agent and a pigeon. It asks the question, "what to do when a curious pigeon gets trapped inside your multi-million dollar, government-issued nuclear briefcase?" If you watch the behind the scenes, you would learn a fun little fact of how the animator spent 4 years making this film, and had $5000 dollars of budget, but spent it all on the music for the film.

MUTO

Blu's ambitious animation, "MUTO", is best described as street graffiti meets stop-motion animation. The magnitude of the work is breath-taking, especially when you consider the artist has to paint and repaint over many times to generate the effect. Furthermore, the scale of the images ranges from the size of a poster to the entire wall of a building, and you begin to wonder how can one person and his assistant achieve something like this. The animation was made in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina.

MediaCityUK - Take Note

When I was studying architecture back in college, I've seen a lot of architectural visualizations, both from students and professionals. However, I have never seen any of them putting a little fun and charm into the project like this one, even if the architecture itself isn't that interesting. "Take Note" is a visualization video for MediaCityUK, a multi-purpose development for BBC in Salford, UK. Created by Andrew Li, the video starts out with millions of post-its (anyone remember "Deadline"?) forming the building. Then, instead of putting boring human figures in, Andrew populated it with colorful and comical characters going about their daily lives.

Neurosonics Audiomedical Labs Inc.

Ever heard of beatboxing? Some of the beatboxers out there are so good I wonder if they are just some instrumental robots disguised under human skins. Partizan Lab took this idea to the extreme and created this creative little music video "Neurosonics Audiomedical Labs Inc." The video shows some lab workers literally playing, spinning and drumming various human heads, and each head would make the corresponding sound with their voice when they are being "played". The track features a group of Scottish DJs called "Scratch Perverts".

Scratch Perverts".

One Rat Short

"One Rat Short" is a short film from the New York based studio Charlex. It's a heartfelt story between a street rat and a lab rat, living in two opposite worlds, and fell into the forbidden love. Charlex has managed to craft a tale that is both gritty yet cute, realistic yet imaginative. The extreme juxtaposition between the two lovers and the world they live in: One being dirty, grim and dark, and the other one being completely clean, bright and sterile, really highlights the contrast between these two rats. This short is the winner of 2006 SIGGRAPH animation festival.

UNIQLOCK in Paris

UNIQLO is a clothing brand from Japan. They started out as a cheaper and more casual clothing choice, but gradually became the hip and trendy name in the fashion world in recently years. I think part of their success is due to their unique and creative marketing strategies. One of those is called the "UNIQLOCK" which periodically shows alternating footages of pretty girls dancing in UNIQLO cloths, and a clock that displays your current local time, all the while playing charming music in the background. It's really hard to describe in words as it's something that needs to be experienced by yourself. Following the new opening of a flagship store in Paris, they've decided to launch a UNIQLOCK at that city too.

Fumiko's Confession

Ah, gotta love those ridiculous and hilarious Japanese anime! "Fumiko's Confession" is an independent short created by Hiroyasu Ishida and peers, and it shows the charm and the quirkiness that is so distinctively Japanese. For the people who don't understand the language (like me), fear not - we've got the helpful and powerful YouTube community out there that helped us on translation: (Be sure to check out the making of too)
(Beginning)
Girl: "Please go out with me!"
Boy: "Sorry! Right now I want to focus on baseball!"
Girl: "Waaah!! Takashi-Kun you idiot!!"
(End)
Girl: "I'll make miso soup for you at home every morning!!"
Boy: "Sorry! I really want to focus on baseball!"
Girl: "Ahh!!" (falls unconscious)

Plaid - Itsu

The vegetarians out there might like this video a lot, and as for everyone else... well, it really depends on your taste for weird and edgy films. Plaid is a British electronic duo who often makes musics for shorts and feature films. (Tekkon- kinkreet and Heaven's Door) Their MV "Itsu", is directed by Pleix, a group of French directors and artists who creates strange and provocative films that often have a social commentary. This video seems to be a criticism to how the cooperations chemically and genetically alter our food in order to bring in more profit, and human-beings, in the most primitive forms, are no different than the food they eat.

Deadline

Stop-motion animation is really a labor of intense passion and dedication. a fellow Taiwanese student Bang-Yao Liu created the short "Deadline" for his senior project at Savannah College of Art and Design. To create this video he and his crew had to use about 6,000 post-it notes and 4 days of work to continuously stick and re-stick post-its all over the wall. The result is an interesting pixelated effect that reminds me of those retro Atari and Nintendo games of the 80's. Click here to watch the making of.

Savannah College of Art and Design做了一部叫"Deadline"的畢業動畫.

Flower Maschine

"Flower Maschine" is a short created by Leandro Feuz when he was employed at Pattern. It is a branding commercial for the Argentinian studio. The film starts out like a typical 2D flash animation composed of colorful lines running around. However, it soon surprises the viewers when those flat elements jump out of the plane into 3D spaces, and become much more interesting as they extend themselves three-dimensionally. According to the studio, those lines are the energy "feeding an underground half organic, half mechanical device."

Sand Animation

Sand animation is a form of performance art that tells a story through drawing a series of images with sand. Kseniya Simonova, a sand artist performing at a Ukraine TV show "Ukraine's Got Talent", told a tear-jerking tale of war, love, and family through her hands and sand. Watching her perform feels a bit like seeing a magician doing tricks; with a few simple gestures or movements, Kseniya is able to transition from one artsy picture to the next with fluidity and beauty, all the while adding a little acting performance of her own. Click here and here to watch the other performances done by the same artist.

Rolltop

A friend of mine sent me a video of the concept design for a futuristic laptop - Rolltop. Designed by Orkin, this neat idea envisions the laptop being one giant, flexible touch-screen that can be "rolled up" like a scroll as oppose to folded up. Apparently, it can also function like a flat tablet or a monitor. Wish the next tablet from some fruit company could look like this...

Thanks, Darson!

Nokia: The Journey Starts Here

Looks like viral marketing is quite popular among cellphone related industry these days. Nokia has recently released a promo for their new phone N900 called "The Journey Starts Here", produced by The Mill. Apparently, this phone is so powerful, that it not only does everything other phones do, but it could also metamorphosis into other monstrous forms and creatures. Again, I am convinced that our cellphones are definitely quite evil on the inside. If you're impatient like me, just jump to 1:40 of the video. That's when all the boring talks stop and actions begin.

Nokia為他們的新手機N900所打的廣告"The Journey Starts Here"(旅程從這裡開始)是由The Mill製作.

Is Your Cell Phone Evil?

The Mill, the brilliant minds that came up with "Dix", teamed up with Droga5 to create this online viral for Net10 that asks the question "is your cell phone evil?" The video started out like another low quality, home-made YouTube video about some kid who got too bored and decided to microwave his cellphone and see what happens. Yet, the event that follows is definitely both shocking and unexpected. Never know so much evilness is hidden inside that gadget.

Flatlife

Flatlife is an interesting animated short depicting a day of four ordinary people, living next to each others. Created by a Belgium student Jonas Geirnaert, this comical animation's humor lies in exaggerating the bizarre situations of seemingly ordinary, everyday activities. Another interesting aspect is how these four people's actions relate to and affect each other, but they never really seem to know it.

555 KUBIK

"How it would be, if a house was dreaming?" is the idea behind the art project 555 KUBIK. Daniel Rossa teamed up with Urbanscreen to project moving imageries onto the facade of the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany, making the whole wall turn into a virtual transformer. The building seems to be constantly morphing and reconfiguring itself into different shapes and patterns. Make sure you turn your volume on when watching this because the sound effects really adds to it. Watch the extended version here, and take a look at some of the other similar projects such as the Mint Plaza and the Augmented Space.

Mint PlazaAugmented Space.

Oktapodi

Oktapodi is an animated short film from the students of a famous French academy Gobelins L'Ecole de L'Image. It is a cute little tale of love, adventure and drama involving two octopus lovers (although since they only have 6 legs, I should really call them hexapus?). Really gotta dig the great animation and the unique Greek environment setting that's used as part of the story-telling. This short has won multiple awards including an Oscar nomination for the Best Short Film as well as the Best of Show in SIGGRAPH 2008. Visit the official site here.

Slo-Mo Fire Breathing

A collection of slow motion video footage of fire breathing from the Vancouver-based fire artist Napalm Dragon. I love the details and the shifting textures of the fire, especially how it sometimes slowly creeps up toward the artists' mouth. Click here for the lower res but faster loading video.

Strawberry Swing MV (Unofficial Version)

Having posted the official music video of Coldplay's new single "Strawberry Swing" yesterday, I feel like the unofficial version should deserve a little attention too. Although this music video, created by The Pixel Hive, is also a stop-motion animation, it stands in contrast with the official one in almost every way. the pace is slower, the tone is more mellow, and yet near the middle of it something so bizarre and freaky happens that I simply do not know how to describe it in words. I also like the subtle visual details that shows the whole thing is set at the London underground metro. So which one do you guys like better?

Strawberry Swing MV

The music video for Cold Play's single "Strawberry Swing" tells an age-old story of how a super hero attempts to fight the evil villain to rescue the damsel in distress. Created by a group of London-based artists Shynola, this epic story is so retro that it actually feels kinda cool in a way. The stop-motion used here is quite amazing. It blends the real actor with the chalk drawn backgrounds so well that I often forgot it is really just a guy standing/lying on top of the ground, and instead got really engaged with the story and visuals.

Ferrofluid

when I watched these videos (and here's another one) of ferrofluid for the first time, I really could not believe what I'm seeing was real and not CG. According to Wikipedia, it is "a liquid which becomes strongly polarized in the presence of a magnetic field" and, apparently, creates some very interesting forms and movements due to that property. Sachiko Kodama, the creator of those videos, is one of the most prominent ferrofluid artists out there. There's also a commercial for Nestle chocolate that's obviously inspired by the fluid (which is in complete CG).

Make Yourself

I have never seen such a cool commercial for a college. Make Yourself is a spot for a university in Chile created by a Chilean studio DAf. The colorful paint splashes and drips across the screen and form into human figures, as if these people are the invisible men gradually revealed by the paint. Also check out the making of narrated by an overly enthusiastic and dramatic narrator.

"How to Train Your Dragon" Teaser

Finally, I get to show you guys what I have been slaving over at DreamWorks for. The company has just released a teaser trailer for "How to Train Your Dragon", slated for March next year. The story is set at a Vikings world where mythical dragons exist, and are men's biggest enemies. I am part of the effects team responsible for things such as fire, water, and lava you see in the trailer.

Alarm

"Alarm" is an animated short from the Korean team Mesai. I've got to say that I'm very surprised at the level of quality and polish an independent studio from Asia could achieve, especially the subtle details in the animation and the soft lighting/rendering. The animation really captures the pain and the agony of waking up every morning trying to get ready for work or school. Watching this short really reminds me one of those drowsy mornings where I really wish I could smash the god-damned alarm clock that just wouldn't let me snooze a bit more.

The Gloaming

Since it's almost Halloween, I might as well post something scary to join the crowd. "The Gloaming" is another short from the brilliant and twisted mind of Andrew Huang, the creator of "Doll Face". It is a really creepy film about a white collar worker climbing into his monitor during a late-night shift, and eventually got stuck in a nightmarish cycle with the evil creatures. The overall eerie feeling, the whole climb-through-the-tunnel scene, and the weird time-space paradox theme really reminds me of the game "Silent Hill 4: The Room". Enjoy the short, and have a great Halloween!

Onwards

"Onwards" is a short created by James Jarvis and sponsored by Nike, which follows a potato-head runner as he jogs across various terrains and fields. I really like the smooth and creative transitions between different parts of the animation, which blends the various imaginative worlds that the runner came across really well. One could tell from this short that the creator really enjoys running, and understands the hardships, joys and surprises that it gave him too.

Coke "Heist"

Ever seen Ocean's Eleven? Well, think of this spot for Coca-Cola as a bug's version of Ocean's Eleven, with their $150 million grand price being... a bottle of coke, of course. New York based studio Psyop has created this charming commercial about a group of bugs trying to steal a bottle of coke from a napping dude with their wit and skills. My favorite part is how a group of butterflies mimics the bottle as a stand-in. This commercial is the winner of the best commercial for 2009 Emmy Awards.

"9" Original Short

Many of you have probably seen or heard of the new animated film "9" released last month, but did you know that it is actually based off a student project created by the same guy who directed the movie? Shane Acker, while studying film and animation in UCLA, showed off his short at a film festival. Tim Burton saw the short and was so impressed by it, that he decided to help Shane turning it into a full-length feature. This is probably every animation student's ultimate dream, and it came true for him. (In case if you don't know about this movie, here's the trailer)

Mr. Furry

Another weird yet interesting commercial for the MTV International identity reboot. This one is from the collaboration of Universal Everything and Realise. Showing a super furry guy and his bouncy pet constantly morphing their fur coat into different colors and forms, this ad is equally strange and refreshing as "Sweetheart". For the other MTV International ads, check out "Mad Drummer", "Windkiss", "Jewels and Oil", and "Chocolate Gold Sunset".

Sweetheart

Sweetheart is part of a series of identity reboot campaign for MTV International. A collaborative effort between Universal Everything and Zeitguised, this video shows an exploding heart made of... candies. At first glance, I really couldn't tell what message it is trying to convey, only thought what ever I saw was pretty cool in a weird way. Then I realized, that is probably its message: To present the brand as something cool in a weird yet refreshing way.

Saturn Rebrand

Saturn is a European electronics chain store, sort of like the Best Buy in America. However, I'm sure Best Buy would never have an advert like this one. Done by 1stAveMachine, this rebranding commercial features a female robot partially disintegrates herself into floating bits and pieces. The whole video is very sexually suggestive, and yet feels very sleek and futuristic at the same time. Also check out the "director's cut" if you're interested. (although somewhat less impressive in my opinion) Warning: Both videos are a bit NSFW since they feature a chick who's about 99% nude.

Pixar Intro Parody

A funny little spoof from CollegeHumor on the well-known Pixar opening sequence. Subtitled "Beware of adorable, homicidal lamps", this short sees the little lamp Luxor Jr. accidentally murdering the "I" in the Pixar logo, and facing the consequences. I wonder if they would do a parody on the DreamWorks opening someday...

Cubic Tragedy

Cubic Tragedy is a short made by Ming-Yuan, a student from National University of Science and Technology in Taiwan. (Where my hometown is!) It is a story of a polygonal girl trying to fix the imperfections of her face by using some magical tools, and yet messed up and ended up with a tragic result. I really like how, rather than being an ambiguous choice, the geometric style of this animation really helps telling the story. this short will seem even funnier to the people who's been through the tortures of 3D digital modelling.

Sony Bravia Ad "Play-Doh"

In the previous post I wrote how Sony's adverts are some of the most creative ones out there, and here's another example to prove my point. "Play-Doh" is one of several Bravia commercials from the joint effort of Fallon London and Passion Pictures. It is a stop motion animation, but what makes it so great is how the real time background elements such as people and cars seem to be moving so fast compared to the bunnies, as if they exist in a separate time, yet occupy the same space. Check out the other Bravia ads such as "Balls","Paint", and "Pyramid", as well as the making of for this ad.

Put Your Ears in Control

Say what you want about Sony and the evilness of their corporation, they still put out some of the most interesting and creative advertisements I've seen. Animator Kristofer Ström has created a colorful and weirdly charming commercial for Sony Ericsson's new MH907 headphones, and explained the primary selling point of these "motion activated headphones" pretty well. Check out the equally weird behind the scenes too.

One Million FPS Bullet-Time

Kurzzeit, a German company who makes "professional measurement equipments", has recently released some footages shot with their one-million FPS camera (frames per second. to put it in perspective, normal cameras can shoot between 24 to 30 FPS) featuring bullet impacts with metal, glass and concrete in ultra slow motion. It is amazing how these solids seem so soft and liquid-like when seen in this context. This stuff is even cooler than what they have in The Matrix.
